Bike Up to the Bar: Clutch City Squire offers extended happy hour prices on Bike Special Mondays

Clutch City Squire invites cyclists to bike on in to the bar.

“People tend to be in a good mood when they’re riding around,” Clutch City Squire’s co-owner and former bike courier, Steve Hannigan, said. “It makes for a great atmosphere and a happy crowd.”

Hannigan explained that the entire patio fence can be used as a bike rack.

“Personally, I love seeing the fence covered with bikes,” he said.

Many group rides in the city are scheduled for Mondays, and Hannigan said that numerous cyclists already frequent the bar.

“We figure they’re going to be out and about anyway,” he said. “So, let’s give them a reason to stop in.”

Clutch City Squire offers Bike Special Mondays, with extended happy hour prices from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for customers who arrive on their bicycles.

The regular happy hour lasts from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day, except Sundays, which offers an all day-long happy hour.

“It’s a reward for our customers who bike here already, and hopefully, it’s a little incentive for more people to explore downtown on two wheels.” Hannigan said.

Much of Clutch City’s staff regularly bike to work as well, he added.

“Cycling is great on any number of levels -- environmentally, economically and it’s low-impact exercise,” Hannigan said. “For all those reasons and more, we’d absolutely love to encourage people to bicycle more.”

As an added deterrent for anyone considering riding home after consuming too much alcohol, Clutch City will go one step further. The bar will store the bike overnight, so a customer can get a ride home with a friend.

“If anyone’s worried about their bike being messed with or stolen overnight, we’ll gladly find a place to store it in the bar,” Hannigan said. “Problem solved, and one less intoxicated person on the road, which to us is a big deal.”

Clutch City Squire is a fixture in the growing nightlife scene near downtown’s Market Square. Located at 410 Main St. on the first floor, the bar is open from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sundays.
