A new business in Texas has just added another dimension to the concept of “designer eyewear.” Indivijual Custom Eyewear revives the original concept of creating eyeglasses that most flatter and fit each individual face.
Indivijual has developed
technology that solves hard-to-fit problems and provides unparalleled precision
in the fit of the custom frame. They
even create a mold of your nose to assure that your custom design is a perfect
Each frame is sculpted to order, based on each client’s unique physical attributes and personal style. Starting with classic shapes, Indivijual’s artists and engineers subtly perfect the lines, the thicknesses, the size and the fit in order to frame a client’s face as a work of art to enhance their look.
"Our frames are something you can't buy off the shelf," says Randall Barnett, the company's founder. “We conduct comprehensive information gathering that creates a specific profile of each customer, and that profile drives our custom design process. Our client’s lifestyle, personality, and tastes are key factors. We analyze and measure our client’s face, skin tone, hair color and eyes.”
Indivijual's artists then create a design and recommend colors that fit that particular client. They use high-end Italian plastics that are made from organic materials, making frames that are both stylish and eco-friendly. (If customers want to submit their own design sketches, Indivijual will work collaboratively to deliver an even more personal product.)
The Origins of Indivijual:
Indivijual Custom Eyewear began when Barnett could not find the signature classic horn-rim style eyeglasses he had been wearing for several years and was unwilling to go without.
"That was the experience that got me thinking about making custom eyewear. Most people have a closet full of clothes they only wear a few times a month. Eyeglasses are something you put on your face every day.” Barnett said. “Nothing else you wear is more a part of your look and your persona than eyewear.”
Growing up in West Texas, Barnett was keenly aware of the famous custom bootmakers in the region who create the best looking and best fitting cowboy boots in the world. After college at Dartmouth, he worked for several years in Manhattan, where he learned to appreciate the distinctive craftsmanship of custom tailors and custom shoemakers.
After researching the eyewear industry, the hunt was on to find tools to craft custom eyewear. Some old-style equipment could be re-designed, but mostly Barnett and his team of engineers and designers had to invent, develop and devise tools to get the job done. To assure world-class quality, frame material comes from Italy, and the hardware from Germany.
After 10 years of research and development, Indivijual is making custom frames for clients around the world. "We take our cues from old-world, European-inspired craftsmanship," Barnett said. “All frames are sculpted to order, based on each person’s unique attributes.” No other companies in the world do what Indivijual Custom Eyewear does to create truly custom eyewear.
Each pair of custom designed, hand-crafted frames costs from $745 to $1500.

“The nose pads are positioned correctly and they fit really nicely on my nose! The frames sit further up on my face, and they sit far enough from my face that when I smile my cheeks don't touch the frame. Amazing!!! The position of the nose pads sure do look weird when looking at the frame on the reverse side, but it works! Thank you, thank you!” - Sydney S., Minneapolis
