Omaha, NE, (August 21, 2014) - Additional research has been conducted indicating that working out may just make you smarter. That being said, travel therapy jobs leader, Aureus Medical, encourages PT professionals to talk to students about the benefits of joining a gym.
As a travel PT, you are well aware of the physical benefits of maintaining a regular exercise routine, but a new study from Michigan State University found that college students who belong to their university gyms are likely to have higher grade point averages than those who stay away from the recreation centers. Authors of the research also found that these individuals were more likely to stay in school longer.
"The results of this study are important because not only are we retaining more students, but we're retaining those that have higher GPAs, which is good for everyone," James Pivarnik, a professor at MSU and lead author of the research, said in a statement.
Pivarnik and his colleagues' findings were published in the Recreational Sports Journal and were based off of data collected from 4,843 students who were in their freshmen and sophomore years. Over the course of four consecutive semesters, the participants with gym memberships were found to maintain higher cumulative GPAs, as well as completing more credit hours that non-gym members. On average, the students had GPAs that were 0.13 points higher and were 14 percent more likely to advance from freshmen to sophomore status.
