Festival Ballet Theatre is proud to present the full-length classic ballet, Swan Lake. It is a story that is as poignant today as it was at its inception over a century ago. Set to Tchaikovsky's elegantly moving score, it is the story of young Prince Siegfried and Odette, the Swan Queen, a young girl doomed to be a swan by day and a woman by night due to the spell of an evil sorcerer. Her fate can only be altered by a man's love, which is put to the test by the sorcerer and his daughter. In the end, it's a story that reminds us of the transformative power of love and its ability to look beyond the surface.
Appearing in the lead roles alongside Festival Ballet Theatre’s highly accomplished company dancers are principal dancers Yuan Yuan Tan and Tiit Helimets of the San Francisco Ballet.
Yuan Yuan Tan was born in Shanghai, China. She trained at Shanghai Dancing School and at the John Cranko School in Stuttgart, Germany before joining the San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in 1995. Yuan Yuan was promoted to principal dancer in 1997. She was the recipient of the 2010 Excellence Award from The Committee of 100, an elite organization of distinguished Chinese Americans; and was a “Hero of Asia” in the Asian edition of Time magazine in October 2004. Yuan Yuan was featured in a GAP ad campaign in 2012; and was featured in Vogue magazine in April 2003.
Tiit Helimets was born in Viljandi, Estonia and trained at Tallinn Ballet School. He began his career as a soloist with Estonian National Ballet and was promoted to principal dancer six months later, making Estonian dance history when he danced the role of Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake at age 18. He joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1999 and became a principal dancer at San Francisco Ballet in 2005. In addition to the many roles he has danced, he received an Outstanding Performance Award for his guest appearances in 2008 in The Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet in Estonia.
