Two-Story Beer Keg Christmas Tree Took Dozens of Workers and 300 Half-Barrel to Build

Treelighting Ceremony and Holiday Tap it Forward Beer Tasting Scheduled for December 18

Rochester, NY – How do you build a two-story tree made of beer kegs? The answer lies with Michael Gaesser, director of packaging innovation for Genesee, who coordinated the making of a 23 foot tall tree outside the Genesee Brew House on Cataract Street. The tree has 10 layers of empty beer kegs stacked two stories high and covered with 600 feet of LED rope light. About a dozen Genesee employees worked for three weeks building the tree that used 300 half-barrel beer kegs.

“It’s really something to see,” said Gaesser. “When you’re driving down St. Paul Street you can’t miss it.”

An official tree lighting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Genesee Brew House. Genesee employees, partners and the Rochester community are invited to attend. After the event, Genesee will sample its new holiday Tap it Forward social investment beer, a Salted Caramel Chocolate Porter. A portion of the proceeds from the beer will be donated to the GardenAerial FlourGarden project, which is a 21st century urban garden in Brown’s Race

The Genesee Brew House collaborated with local Chocolatier Jennifer Posey, owner of Hedonist Artisan Chocolates, to create the new Salted Caramel Chocolate Porter. Hedonist’s Salted caramels and dark chocolate were added into the brew kettle to make this distinctive porter. The beer is available for a very limited time on tap at the Genesee Brew House. Genesee-partner Wright Beverage Distributing also distributed the beer to craft beer bars throughout Rochester.

According to Genesee Brew House Brewmaster Dean Jones, the porter is expected to sell out quickly. “If you’re interested in tasting this beer, come to our event or make friends with your favorite bartender! It’s a  very small handcrafted pilot beer so we don’t have a lot of it,” said Jones.
