The month culminated with Kansas City’s only oyster eating competition
Kansas City, Mo. (April 3, 2015) – March marked Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar’s inaugural Oyster Month, which raised nearly $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and culminated with Jax’s inaugural oyster eating competition, the only such competition in the metro area, on Sunday, March 29. The inaugural event saw seven teams of four slurp as many oysters as possible during the 2-minute competition that saw professional eater Randy Santel and his team, “Mother Shuckers,” win and take home the $1,000 purse. Santel and his team also won free crab at Jax Fish House for one year.
“It may have been the messiest and most chaotic two minutes I have witnessed in a restaurant, but it was also the most fun,” said Rebekah Wells, senior campaign manager at LLS. “My favorite part was seeing the teams really get into the competition by dressing up, having signs and creative names. I haven’t seen anything else like this event in Kansas City, and I’m so glad we got to be a part.”
In addition to entrance fees from the competition, donated alcohol allowed Jax to give all profits from its Strawberry Lemonade, Boulevard Wheat and Muscadet sales on March 29 to LLS. And during the entire month, ten cents was donated for every oyster shucked at Jax.
