MKT BAR at Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown Mirrors Houston’s Diversity with Expanded Offerings, Specials & New Website


HOUSTON, TEXAS – May 25, 2016 – MKT BAR at Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown, a co-pioneer in Houston’s downtown revitalization and modern-day anchor as a culinary and cultural hub, announces new cocktails and menu items, weekly specials and a new website. With its always-evolving offerings, MKT BAR extends its appeal with something for everyone through cuisine, music, art exhibits and special events that reflect the city’s renowned global diversity.

MKT BAR's new food and drink menu rolls out on Friday, May 27th. Eleven new cocktail offerings feature mixology magic such as the Ginger Blossom with fresh pineapple-orange juice, orange blossom syrup and saké, the Splish-Splash with dill-infused agave nectar, pinot grigio and strained cucumber finished with bitters, and the Killa Kafe, a combination of port and espresso topped with fresh whipped cream. Craft beers and boutique wines round out the bar selection with both familiar options and adventurous new ones.

With hints from home, comfort food continues to reign supreme on the MKT BAR menu with inventive pizzas, burgers and more. New menu offerings with an international twist feature lamb tacos, two fresh salads and three sandwiches including the Kamtastic, a Hill Country fried chicken breast sandwich inspired by the song "Make Some Room," performed by the Houston-based band and MKT BAR favorites The Suffers with lead singer Kam Franklin.

Weekly food and drink specials on par with the popular Tuesday/Thursday Steak Night have been expanded to include Fun & Games Night on Mondays, Vinyl & Vino Wednesdays and Soul Sessions with $5 Saturday cocktails to offer something different every night of the week. Weekend Brunch continues to wake up appetites on Saturdays and Sundays, with live music on Sundays creating a lively atmosphere.

Perpetuating the gastropub’s energetic vibe, a new dedicated website details the variety of upcoming live music performances from numerous genres and promotes rotating art exhibits that feature local artists such as “FEAST YOUR EYES: Food Photography from Across Texas on view May 25 - July 9, 2016, presented in partnership with Houston Center for Photography.

The MKT BAR stage plays host to live music with local urban roots, ranging from DJ sets and jazz combos to blues and light rock offerings. Plenty of notables have graced the stage including Robert Ellis, Passion Pit (DJ Set) and Kam Franklin (The Suffers). Eager audiences await each performance, often enjoying a one-night hometown stop from acclaimed touring artists.

Recently praised in Houston Press for her dedication to supporting local music, owner Ann-Marie Tcholakian puts her money where her mouth is: “For more than three years, MKT BAR’s Ann-Marie Tcholakian has hosted 30 live local acts every month at her downtown grocery store turned music venue. She continually promotes bands and musicians in our scene who may not get the opportunity otherwise. According to local talent buyer and manager Mark C. Austin, ‘You’d be hard-pressed to find someone spending more money [on local music] on a monthly basis than her.’ ”

Community involvement is an integral part of the MKT BAR and Phoenicia businesses, passionately supporting a variety of local groups focused on arts, education, the environment and human services including SEARCH Homeless Services, Houston Food Bank, and Society for the Performing Arts Houston. MKT BAR and Phoenicia have also commissioned and purchased permanent works from local artists GONZO247, David Graeve, Santos Guerrero, Michael Meazell Macedo, Lester Marks, Patrick Renner and Alfredo Scaroina that can seen throughout the culinary and cultural haven.
