April 22nd,2014 - It’s been said that the “enemy of my enemy is my friend.” How else can you explain the phenomenon, Marketing Pulpit International (MPI), a motley crew of radio talk show hosts that include a former NFL player, a former beauty queen, an art dealer, a piano instructor, a graphic designer and a tax preparer?
It seems that the only thing they have in common is their relentless pursuit of “building strong businesses in the community, and putting people to work.” That’s the mission that drives Marketing Pulpit founder, Robert Gatewood, MBA.
Gatewood came up with the idea during the height of the recent economic crisis. He witnessed rampant unemployment among the youths in his community and an equally daunting failure rate among businesses in his community. He surmised that if he could solve one of the problems, it would automatically take care of the other.
According to Gatewood, “the key saving failing businesses is to educate them in marketing.” Despite providing marketing services through his company Gatewood Marketing, and teaching marketing at a local college, he felt the need for an even larger platform, so in 2010, he started the Marketing Pulpit Radio Show at Radio-One’s WOL-AM in Washington, DC. The show was named “Marketing Pulpit” to honor his father, a Baptist minister, who died just days before the first show.
To further spread the “marketing gospel,” as Gatewood puts it, he started hand-picking community-minded radio hosts around the country in order to spread the word in their respective communities. His latest recruit, former Pittsburgh Steeler Anthony Griggs, shares the star power stage with former Ms. DC, Alena 7. She joined the mission in 2012.
“It’s my calling,” according to Gatewood who adds, “I’m a firm believer that we shouldn’t complain about that which we have the power to change.”
