CARBONDALE, Colo. (May 4, 2015) – Backbone Media, the country’s premier active lifestyle agency, is pleased to announce that Sam Bass, the long-time editor of Skiing Magazine, will join its team in the newly created role of Editor and Content Director.
"Sam has been the driving force behind Skiing Magazine for years. His diverse experience, knowledge and energy will be an asset to Backbone as more of our brand and tourism partners look to build authentic stories that resonate with their consumer base,” says Penn Newhard, founding partner at Backbone Media. “Pairing Sam's editorial acumen with Backbone’s ability to scale distribution will be a powerful combination for active lifestyle brands.”
Bass has worked in magazine journalism for nearly 13 years, most recently serving as Skiing Magazine's editor-in-chief since 2010. While at Skiing, he helped pilot the 67-year-old brand into the digital era, ran a robust and highly-regarded equipment testing program, and managed all aspects of daily magazine operation, including content genesis, execution, and distribution. In addition to his editorial duties at Skiing, Bass has worked as a freelance writer for titles including Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal, Popular Science, and Canoe & Kayak.
"Compelling storytelling is proving to be a very effective way to connect brands with target audiences, and I'm excited to help Backbone fortify its capabilities in this arena,” says Bass. “Skiing Magazine has given me great opportunities over the past decade, and I can't wait to translate that experience into results for Backbone's clients."
Bass grew up in Maine, spent much of his life outdoors, and brings with him a keen understanding of active outdoor brands and lifestyles. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from Colorado College. He'll be relocating to Backbone's Carbondale, Colorado, headquarters with his wife and two young children.
