A Colorado health and wellness destination, Glenwood Springs is famous for its mineral hot springs, but there is only one spa in the resort town where guests can experience the weightlessness of Watsu, a form of shiatsu massage that takes place in the water.
Splendor Mountain Spa
Located in a charming brick cottage that has been converted into a healing arts center, Splendor Mountain Spa offers many types of massage services including therapeutic, deep tissue, ashiatsu, hot stone and reflexology, but it is noted for its emphasis on Watsu and Water Dance.
Watsu and Water Dance treatments take place in a specialized 3,000 gallon pool that is kept at a comfortable 96°F (35°C). During a Watsu treatment, your head is never submerged; a therapist performs a series of movements with one hand while she stabilizes your head and neck with the other. As you float, your therapist will gently rock and stretch your body. Water Dance, on the other hand, integrates full immersion and requires more comfort in the water and a greater bond of trust between practitioner and client.
Due to the weightless environment of the water, pressure on the body’s joints is reduced. Watsu is especially therapeutic for pregnant women and those who experience chronic pain.
The spa. In addition to the private therapy pool, Splendor Mountain Spa features a sauna and four treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite.
Try this. For maximum relaxation, try a 90- or 120-minute Watsu & Massage package.
