Girls on the Run Kicks Off in Wyoming
Registration is now open in Cheyenne for Wyoming’s first Girls on the Run (GOTR) program, a confidence-building effort aimed at girls in grades 3-5.
“This is an awesome program that uses dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness and build confidence,” said Cindy Bradley, Girls on the Run Wyoming council director.
Small teams of 8-15 girls meet twice per week for 10 weeks. At the season’s end, the girls and their running buddies will complete a 5K event, which is also open to the public. The Girls on the Run fall season begins August 29, and the culminating 5K will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 9 a.m. in Lion’s Park. A spring season is also planned.
"When I saw Wyoming was the ONLY state not offering Girls on the Run, it became my mission to bring this program to girls in our state,” Bradley said. “The program’s approach can help build their character, while completing a 5k race inspires a feeling of accomplishment."
The national nonprofit organization is in its 20th year, and the addition of Cheyenne gives Girls on the Run a presence in all 50 states. The $150 program fee includes the curriculum and coaching for the 10-week program, healthy snacks at practices, parent materials, GOTR t-shirt, 5k run registration, insurance and facility costs.
Girls in grades 3 through 5 may register online at GOTRWyoming.org. More information about the program and the 5K race is also available by calling 307-631-9592 or emailing email@example.com.
