Extend Your Stay in Glenwood Springs to Catch the Sunday Aspen Music Festival

The Aspen Music Festival is the United States’ premier classical music festival, and it’s just a short drive from Glenwood Springs, Colorado. With Glenwood’s abundance of affordable lodging, it’s easy to extend your stay through Sunday and take in a final end-of-the-week free concert.

Staying through Sunday also has the advantage of fewer crowds at Glenwood’s most popular attractions including the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool and Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park; it’s easier to book a rafting trip and get a table for lunch at the town’s favorite eateries. Overall, the atmosphere on Sunday is a bit more relaxed. What better way to kick back at the end of the week than on the lawn listening to the world’s greatest composers as played by today’s talented young musicians?

Concert tickets to sit inside the Benedict Music Tent can be purchased for $80 - $85, but music al fresco is always free on the David Karetsky Music Lawn or in the Music Garden, outside the tent. Bring a blanket and be prepared to be inspired, delighted and moved by music that’s surprisingly fresh, despite the fact that some pieces are a couple of centuries old!

The Aspen Music Festival draws top classical musicians from around the world; this year more than 630 students from 40 states and more than 36 countries bring classical music to the mountains near Glenwood Springs. The 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon concerts feature the Aspen Festival Orchestra with students and faculty members playing side by side. This year’s theme is “The New Romantics.” Here’s what you can expect at upcoming concerts in August.

Sunday August 10. Featuring Nikolai Lugansky on piano

Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, op. 30

Dvorak: Carnival Overture, B. 169, op. 92

Sunday August 17. Featuring the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Chorus
