There is an exercise that starts with the facilitator giving a group of people instructions to watch a video and count the number of times a ball is being passed back and forth between a team during a very short period of time. Everyone begins concentrating on the ball and putting down his or her hash marks after every pass of the ball. After the video stops everyone is anxious to give his or her count.
At this point, the facilitator asks, “Who saw the dancing gorilla?” (It’s actually a man in a gorilla suit dancing between the people passing the ball.) A large majority of the participants don’t see the dancing gorilla because their entire focus was on the ball.
Think of the ball as negativity. If that is all you focus on, that’s all you’ll see. You’ll miss all the positive things that are going on around you at work and at home. Keep your focus on the positive.
