Westcott wins Hemi Challenge at Indy again
CLERMONT, Ind. (Aug. 29, 2014) – It wasn’t easy, but Charlie Westcott grabbed his sixth victory in the Dodge Hemi Challenge at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
The special event is part of the National Hot Rod Association’s 60th Chevrolet Performance US Nationals.
All six of Westcott’s Challenge wins have come on Goodyear tires. Two of the four cars in the 26-car field of the 2014 event that advanced to the semi-final round were equipped with Goodyear tires. The other Goodyear-shod car was driven by Westcott’s father, also named Charlie.
“We’ve been running Goodyear tires exclusively for at least ten years,” Westcott said.
The winner couldn’t explain his team’s consistent success in the event on drag racing’s biggest stage.
“Things just always work out,” the younger Westcott said. “We take it serious. It worked out this year. We didn’t look as strong as we typically do. But it ended up working out and here we are.”
The victory celebration, including the awarding of the special Hemi Challenge trophy, symbolic of victory in the long-running program, and the $15,000 winner’s check took place as darkness fell. The flash of the gathered photographers’ strobe lights illuminated the winning car and the yellow lettering of its Goodyear tires.
“It’s been a tough weekend for us, but it ended up working out, so we can’t complain,” Westcott said.
Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
