FILM TO SCREEN AT OUTFEST FUSION LGBT PEOPLE OF COLOR FILM FESTIVAL

LOS ANGELES (March 11, 2015) – The life of the legendary Latina lesbian Nancy Valverde is celebrated in the documentary short film, NANCY FROM EAST SIDE CLOVER. Directed by Gregorio Davila and produced by Mario J. Novoa, the film is set to screen at Outfest Fusion LGBT People of Color Film Festival on March 14, 2015.

Growing up poor, Chicano, a woman and a Lesbian in mid-20th century East L.A., Nancy Valverde's life was a constant uphill battle. Nancy was first arrested by police at the age of 17 for "masquerading,” a misdemeanor crime for wearing any items of clothing that the police deemed belonged ‘to the opposite gender.’ Over the years, she would endure numerous arrests, followed by police harassment and abuse in city and county jails. At times she was even shunned by others in the LGBT community for being “too out.” Today at age 83, Nancy’s defiance and resilience to maintain her self-identity as a butch Lesbian has garnered her legendary status in the Los Angeles LGBTQ community.

NANCY FROM EAST SIDE CLOVER has screened at several film festivals around the country, including the 2014 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Favorite Lesbian Short Film.

This acclaimed short is part of Davila and Novoa’s upcoming feature length documentary film, L.A. A QUEER HISTORY, which unveils the rich Gay history of the Los Angeles area. The feature film project has already received high-praise, earning a Certificate of Recognition from Mayor Eric Garcetti for its efforts to showcase Los Angeles LGBT history.
