CAN-DO CHICKEN PROVES PLATE IS MORE THAN HALF FULL IN: I GOT A CHICKEN FOR MY BIRTHDAY
Gifts, like friends, can surprise us – and sometimes what (or who) we think we want is not as good as what we get. This is a lesson worth learning and one that’s hilariously brought home in Laura Gehl’s new book, I Got a Chicken for My Birthday (Carolrhoda/Lerner, March), which Kirkus in a starred review called "an ingenious treat for all ages."
When a comically drawn chicken is revealed as a special birthday gift from Abuela Lola, disappointment is palpable – particularly when it’s compared with the hoped-for present of a trip to a carnival. But step-by-step, the irrepressible birthday chicken wins the day with a list and a plan; by hiring a dog, a cat, and a hamster; and with expert use of a hammer. Then after finding some help, the chicken delights by leading a high-stepping parade to a homemade carnival that beats all.
Gehl provides a comical look at what can be one of our most highly charged moments of the year, and provides a funny, but helpful opening for parents to get kids talking about birthdays, gift etiquette – and chickens. Doesn’t get much better than that!
