Avalanche Fatality Near Cooke City

(Cody, WY) A snowmobiler from North Dakota died in an avalanche yesterday on the Southeast face of Sheep Mountain between Lulu Pass and Round Lake. The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center said the slide was triggered by the victim who became buried underneath his sled which was also buried under six feet of snow. Two other people riding with the victim got caught up in the avalanche as well, however both were able to deploy their airbags and survived. One was completely buried and the other was buried up to his chest. The have minor injuries. The avalanche danger is rated HIGH today on all slopes. Natural and human triggered slides are still likely so the GNFAC is continuing a Backcountry Avalance Warning for the mountains near Cooke City, the Madison Range, the Gallatin Range, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, and the Bridger Range. Avalanche terrain including runout zones should be avoided. Avalanches were reported throughout last week and several people were caught in them, although only yesterday's incident was fatal.
