Ice Climbing Casualty

(Cody Wyo)– On Sunday, February 14, 2016, an ice climber from Phoenix, Arizona, fell from the “High on Boulder” ice flow near the Majo Ranch located at 4292 South Fork Road. The call came into the Park County Sheriff’s Office at 1:30 p.m. A nearby deputy was immediately dispatched to the area. Gary Weber, age 56 was climbing with a guide on the ice flow as part of the annual Cody Ice Climbing Festival. The High on Boulder Ice flow is located on the east side of the Shoshone River southeast of the Cabin Creek Trailhead parking area at the end of the South Fork Road. Weber and his guide had reached the summit of the flow and were descending when the accident happened. The guide was lowering Weber down the flow when, due to his inattention, he ran out of rope causing Weber to fall. After dropping some 30 feet, Weber was able to catch himself with his ice axe preventing himself from falling an additional 50 feet to the bottom. Fellow climbers then reached Weber and were able to lower him to the bottom. Weber complained of injuries to his lower left leg. His companions were able to stabilize the injured area before helping Weber to a waiting ambulance from West Park Hospital. Weber was transported to West Park where his condition is unknown at this time. #reboot #news
