5 inspiring takeaways from Coach Olenik

(Cody, Wyo.) - After five successful years of coaching, Cody boy's basketball coach, Dean Olenik has resigned. Reboot reached out to get a bit of information on his decision and what the future holds for him and the Cody Broncs: *Reboot: **What led you to make the decision to step down? * *Olenik: * *I really enjoyed my time as a coach, and the kids were amazing. I felt like it was time to move on to another chapter in life and spend more time with family. I'd also like to explore some of the reasons why I choose to live in Wyoming, like being in the outdoors and enjoying the mountains. I also sponsor the Cody High School Outdoor's Club, and I'd like to put more energy and focus into that. * *Reboot: **Looking back, what's your favorite memory of coaching? * *Olenik:** Three distinct things stand out for me. It had been 57 years since Cody had won a state basketball title. * *My Assistant Coach for my first 3 years, Steve Novakovich, was my coach when I played in Cody. To have been able to win a state championship with him, alongside his wife and our bookkeeper Elaine, was very special. Finally, all the hours on the bus and at practice with the kids, embracing the highs and the lows is something I'll always appreciate. * *Reboot: **What did you learn in your 5 years of coaching? * *Olenik:* *My biggest takeaway is that we have some of the most amazing people across the state of Wyoming. The high level and quality of kids here in Cody, as well as around the state, is inspiring. I'm also extremely proud that in my five years of coaching, my basketball players averaged a 3.72 GPA. * *Reboot: **What does the future hold for you and the Cody Basketball program?* *Olenik: * *I'd like to spend more quality time with my family as well as more time in the amazing outdoors of Wyoming. I also have plans to take our High School's Outdoor Club to the next level which will hopefully include taking a few big trips and also enjoying the local outdoor activities we have right in our backyard. The Cody Bronc's future is bright. We have many talented, young kids with good character and high morals. I believe we currently have some of the best talent, and that will remain true over the next few years.* *Reboot: **What advice would you give to the incoming coach for next season?* *Olenik: **I would tell the next coach to follow your instincts, be true to your beliefs and to have fun. * #reboot #news
