No license? No problem! Free Fishing Day is this Saturday

(Bighorn Basin, Wyo.) - Kids are invited to ‘get hooked on fishing’ at the annual Cody Kids Fishing Day event Saturday, June 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beck Lake Recreation Area in Cody. “This is a great opportunity for Cody area youth and their families to spend the day outdoors learning about the sport of fishing,” said Jason Burckhardt, Cody region fisheries biologist. “The event is free of charge and the entire family is encouraged to attend.” The day will begin with educational activities conducted by Game and Fish and Trout Unlimited that include spin casting, knot tying and learning how to release a fish. A free hotdog lunch and a fishing derby hosted by the Cody Optimist Club will follow in the afternoon. Children and their families will have the opportunity to catch yellow perch, cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Registration for educational activities begins at 8:30 a.m. at the lower picnic area at Beck Lake Recreation Area. Participants should bring their own poles, tackle and bait but some fishing gear and bait will be available if needed. As Wyoming’s weather can be unpredictable, everyone should dress warmly and be prepared for cold, wet weather. Kids Fishing Day events are held across Wyoming in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week. Saturday is also Free Fishing Day across the state of Wyoming. Anyone may fish without a fishing license or conservation stamp on free fishing day, Saturday June 4, 2016. All limits and other fishing regulations apply. The event is hosted by Cody Optimists Club, East Yellowstone Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Shoshone National Forest, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Sponsors include Albertsons, Coca-cola, Frito-Lay, Keebler, McDonalds, Montana Wheat, Rocky Mountain Discount Sports, Taco Johns, Walmart, Wendy's and Wyoming Outdoorsmen. *Feature photo: Wyoming fishing fun, 2015 (photo provided by - Justine May)
