Ask a question, save a life, that is what the Mayors Youth Council was trained to do last Tuesday April 19th. Prevention Management Organization of Wyoming
6 participants of The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) in Question, Persuade,
Refer (QPR ).
The Mayor’s Youth Council was founded in 2002, and was created to increase
awareness and involvement of Cheyenne’s youth in city government and in the
community at large. This year the Mayor’s Youth Council has chosen suicide
prevention as their focus for this year. They have been involved in focus
groups and data collection to see what is going on with our youth and
suicide. The MYC had asked PMO if they could come and train them in QPR.
QPR is an evidence based gate keeper training and stands for Question,
Persuade, Refer, the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life
from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver to
help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to
recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question,
persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like
you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling,
or neighbor. This training is for anyone and everyone, it teaches you to be
more aware if a friend, loved one, or someone you know might be struggling.
Ask a question, save a life.
Other projects the MYC has worked on this year include painting Greenway
fences on the south corridor, making fleece blankets with the Parks & Rec
After School Latchkey children for COMEA Shelter residents, and hosting a
teen activity afternoon during Mental Health month in March at the Youth
Activity and Community Center at Romero Park.
