Atlantic City, Wyoming, Voices from a Powerful Place
Book Premiere at the Pioneer Museum
Atlantic City, Wyo. Join the Atlantic City Historical Society’s board of directors to launch its book, Atlantic City, Wyoming, Voices from a Powerful Place, at the Fremont County Pioneer Museum in Lander, 1443 W. Main St., on Thursday, November 16, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The 276-page volume celebrates the tiny gold mining town’s 150-year history with stories contributed by more than 50 authors who lived in or passed through here. Contributors submitted hundreds of images so the layout is rich with faces and places.
A crossroad of all things Western, Atlantic City survives nearly in spite of itself at 7,600’ in the foothills of the mighty Wind River Range. Trail pioneers passed near here. Gold miners initiated Wyoming’s boom-bust cycle when they started the town in 1868. Ranchers and cowboys knew this place then and still tend herds on local allotments. Soldiers occupied a camp outside of town. Old West myths abound, and contemporary legends are equally noteworthy.
U.S. Steel operated its taconite mine nearby for two decades. You might have enjoyed a fine meal, sipped a wee dram of scotch or been entertained by myriad other attractions. Community and commerce walked hand-in-hand through the decades. Winter offers its perennial theme, and if you’ve spent much time here you’ve heard tall tales – some true – told by the scores of storytellers who love this place.
Grab some friends, and come celebrate this sesquicentennial anniversary book about one of Wyoming’s iconic towns. Books available for purchase include the standard softcover volume and a limited edition hard cover. Refreshments provided. For further details: email@example.com
