HOUSTON, November 17, 2016 — With all of the memories and joy from last year, Phoenicia Specialty Foods is bringing back the YUMMY! Wonderland International Festival & Brunch for the second year on Saturday, December 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to give back this holiday season. The day of food, crafts, dance and music will be held at Phoenicia’s Downtown location, bringing the best of global holiday traditions and cultures under one festive roof for a party that’s full of joy for the entire family.
Like the diverse and delicious offerings at Phoenicia, the YUMMY! Wonderland Festival highlights cuisine and customs of multiple countries and regions including the United States, Mexico, Latin America, Russia and the Ukraine among others. Various talent and entertainment from across Houston will be in attendance, showcasing globally inspired holiday songs, culture and arts including:
- Quartet group Operativo Houston, benefiting local opera singers in Houston, will sing Christmas carols in English and German, filling the halls of Phoenicia with joy
- FLY Dance Company, the dynamic dance team, will return for the second year, bringing a jolt of energy with a preview of their Healthy Hip Hop Show
- Ridna Shkola Ukrainian School of Houston “Trepet,” performing traditional folk dances
- The Russian Cultural Center returns with a musical performance for the second year and will also sell unique Russian crafts that are essential during the holidays
In addition to experiencing live performances, families will create memories together making hands-on crafts including cookie decorating. The beloved Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be on hand for photo opportunities and children can tell Santa what’s on their wish list, speaking in French and English. There will also be ornament decorating and crafts with Mrs. Claus and her elves. And, since the holidays are the perfect time for merriment and “cheer-fulness,” adults can enjoy festive holiday wine and food pairing for free.
Returning to the festival for the second year for holiday shopping, The Community Cloth will sell artisanal hand-crafted products locally made by women who come from all corners of the world to make Houston their home. In addition, the Houston Institute for Culture East End Studio Gallery will showcase handmade crafts from Mexico and hand-painted dolls to decorate the Christmas tree. Many other retail vendors will display artifacts from across the globe.
Phoenicia is celebrating the generosity of the season and its commitment to the community as an official sponsor of the Houston Fire Department’s (HFD) Operation Stocking Stuffer. Guests are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the cause.
An international selection of à la carte entrées, brunch plates and desserts will be available for purchase at the grille line inside Phoenicia, providing a culinary journey of delicious global dishes that are served during the holiday. Features include pomegranate-glazed salmon, crab quiche, spiced hash browns and warm cranberry coffee cake among other delights. Attendees can also enjoy sampling throughout the market for further exploration of international flavors.
The event is open to the public and admission is free, with the option to purchase food. Reservations are highly recommended as tickets are limited. ABOUT PHOENICIA SPECIALTY FOODS
Offering food lovers more than 15,000 products from over 50 countries at down-to-earth prices, Phoenicia Specialty Foods is Houston’s premier family-owned, one-stop, gourmet international food market--and a dream that started modestly. In 1983, Bob and Arpi Tcholakian, Lebanese immigrants of Armenian descent, opened Arpi’s Deli, a Mediterranean-style delicatessen in West Houston. By 1992, the Tcholakians were renting additional space to store their many imported goods. Retail and wholesale customers were soon visiting the storage space to purchase a case of desired, hard-to-find specialty items, and eventually this grocery section became a specialty foods market. Phoenicia Specialty Foods has grown significantly by being responsive to loyal customers and maintaining its focus on offering a wide variety of unique, quality international brands not available elsewhere. More than a grocery, Phoenicia Specialty Foods is an experience. International shoppers and food enthusiasts alike enjoy fresh-baked artisan breads, award-winning European pastries, boutique wines and beers, quality meats and cheeses, a fresh seafood department, hot grill items, tasty prepared foods, exotic produce and a fine assortment of housewares. In 2011, Phoenicia Specialty Foods expanded with the opening of its downtown location and MKT BAR. Located within Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown, the urban chic MKT BAR offers gourmet appetizers, select wines, tasty beers on tap, a unique gelato selection and a wide variety of coffees and teas from around the world. Within walking distance to many attractions downtown, MKT BAR is a perfect place to enjoy before or after a game, a concert or a performance.
