HOUSTON – April 3, 2018 - Kimono Zulu, a creative exploration led by Tina Zulu, will host a three-day trunk show at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, MFA Shop April 20-22 with a special unveiling of a kimono embellished by prominent graffiti artist GONZO247 at the opening reception on April 20.

Meet brand stylist Tina Zulu and shop a collection of vintage Japanese kimonos redesigned by contemporary artists and fashion designers, as well as upcycled obi handbags and accessories and a selection of men’s and women’s vintage kimonos.

Kimono Zulu draws upon the rich history of traditional Japanese attire, mainly the kimono, and its influence on other cultures throughout Asia and the West. Through artist collaborations, Tina Zulu inspires and initiates the visual conversation for artists to incorporate their own design sensibilities into the vision for the brand, bringing new life to vintage kimonos in a thoughtful, beautiful and often playful way. The reimagined kimonos are embellished and modernized to be enjoyed as unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art.

In addition to GONZO247, featured collaborators are Selven O'Keef Jarmon, Janavi M. Folmsbee, Uyen-My Pham, Emilie Duval, Christy Karll, Judy Masliyah, Katsola, Shelbi Nicole, Jennifer Gabiola, Mina Gaber, and Elijah Coccetti.

“It is an incredible honor to present our artist collaboration series at the MFA Shop, which the New York Times recognizes as “one of the most cleverly curated museum shops in America,” says Tina Zulu, Kimono Zulu owner and brand stylist. “It’s the perfect platform to showcase wearable art such as the kimono we are unveiling by GONZO247. Famous for his prolific work branding the city of Houston with colorful, public art and large murals such as the “Houston is Inspired” mural in Downtown Houston, GONZO247’s kimono gives one lucky fan or collector something more tangible and attainable to connect with.”

“In addition, the reimagined kimonos by Indian-born artist Janavi M. Folmsbee, which are embellished with Rajasthani traditional materials complement the current exhibition Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India while incorporating sea creatures seen on her scuba dives.”
